Youth & Government is a youth-led program, but it cannot function properly without the aid of adult volunteers. Program Mentors serve as adult volunteers who support the legislature, lobby, press, and courts program areas. Mentors can be teachers, parents, college students, former Youth & Government participants, Y associates, or any adult who is passionate about promoting teen leadership. Mentors must be 18 years or older and submit to a background check through the Y. The Mentor should be a mature, dependable, and responsible individual. Relate well to and enjoy working with youth in grades 9-12. Program Mentors should be ready to not run programs, but to support the student leaders of the programs. Mentors should connect with the program’s mission and goals. A Y&G Adult Program Mentor is required to have some form of experience, expertise, or knowledge in Maryland state government, legislation, politics, history, civics, law, journalism, lobbying, or courts that can be applied to one of our four program areas: Legislature, Lobby, Courts, and Press. A mentor attends our three conferences, based on their availability, and 1-2 virtual planning meetings prior to the conferences. At the conferences, they are responsible for assisting students in their projects and providing guidance to offer students real world knowledge on their program areas.
