Youth and Government Advisors

Baltimore County

Delegation Advisors provide leadership to local delegations. These adults organize activities, teach participants the program components, accompany delegates to the State Conference, provide adult supervision, and meet the requirement that each delegation maintains a 1:10 adult-to-student ratio. At the State Conference, these adults are asked to assist in program areas, nightly duty at the hotel, and any other duties as assigned. The lead advisor serves as the primary point of contact between the delegation and the State Office. The lead advisor serves a critical role in the delegation, helping to facilitate a positive learning experience for the youth. They help provide guidance and resources to the youth so they can carry out their roles within the delegation. Advisors must be 21 years or older and submit to a background check through the Y. The advisor should be a mature, dependable, and responsible individual. Relate well to and enjoy working with youth in grades 9-12. Having a basic understanding of government processes is helpful, but not required. Since the active participants are the students, the primary responsibility of the advisor is to explain the requirements of the Program. The advisor will need to support weekly or biweekly delegation meetings that are student led with resources provided. Advisor encourages the youth to organize their delegation, select roles, draft bills, and meet the requirements of the program.

We have five key goals for the Youth & Government program. 1. Develop a strong sense of community (inter-delegate/delegation relationships) and realism (strict imitation of the structures and processes of the Maryland) 2. Increase the opportunities, encouragement and support for young people to grow as leaders of their communities through a model legislature and court; values based leadership development; and direct service. 3. Ensure our program represents the diversity of the state of Maryland by maintaining a program that is open and accessible to all, regardless of their economic circumstance. 4. Engage a highly motivated team of volunteers to carry out this work. 5. Secure the program’s future through sound fiscal management and lasting partnerships.
